![]() Having a meal planning app on your mobile device makes it possible to bring your recipe catalog with you and meal plan anytime, anywhere. ![]() You read that right, my meals for the entire week and my grocery list take me less than ten minutes each week to plan. ![]() Meal Planning Apps have taken this one step further, allowing me to transform this step, that seemed to take forever, into a quick-and-easy task I can complete in less than ten minutes. I no longer need to make decisions about what I will eat three times each day - I make that decision once, at the beginning of the week. But I think that by leveraging technology well we are more likely to achieve all the good things I’ve mentioned, and therefore we’re better able to be good stewards of our resources and our health. Software in the kitchen may not be the right choice for everyone. And a key component of that, for me at least, is using the right software for the job at hand - in other words, using a Recipe Management or Meal Planning App. With proper planning and process, however, it actually can take far less time than going out to eat. The primary downside that many folks still perceive is the time commitment home cooking requires. It also helps us to focus on local foods, to eat what is seasonal, to avoid waste, and to have time with family. Home cooking certainly costs less than restaurant meals. I think more and more people have been feeling this way in recent years for many, a surprise benefit of the pandemic experience has been a reconnection with the pleasures of home cooking. Particularly when I’ve also grown some of it myself. I have come to savor the joy that flavors the food I cook myself. Or, at least my relationship with food has. Predictably, this landed me right back in the pattern of going out to eat.īut that was long ago - I’ve grown up alot. In a frenzy, I would dash to the grocery store, wander around, pick up a bunch of food that looked good, and feel very proud of myself until midweek when I realized I somehow didn’t have enough food to get through the week. Then I would get the credit card bill and decide that I needed to try to save money by eating in. My knee-jerk reaction was to go out to eat most meals. In early adulthood, I found the task of keeping myself fed overwhelming and never-ending.
